Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Golf Champion

Brian claimed the county champinship four times in his life – he currently stands joint third in the oldest county championship in England, dating back to 1893.

Brian’s wins came in 1981 and 1982, the last at Royal Jersey GC, was also the last time a player has won the Sloane-Stanley Challenge Cup back-to-back (correct up until 2022).

He was also captain of the Hampshire team in both those years, and becoming the second player in the post-war era to land the county’s blue riband event during their captaincy – only David Harrison (1971) and Martin Young (2016)

As well as playing for the county in South East League matches, he also appeared in the South East Qualfier for the English County Finals for a number of years, and reached the final in 1977 and 1982, when Brian was captain.

He also won the Pechell Salver in 1975 as the leading qualifier at the county championship at Hayling, and the Hampshire Open at Blackmoor in 1976, and again at Stoneham in 1981, beating the best Hampshire PGA professionals, as well as the county’s leading amateurs.

He was also the leading amateur in the competition in 1979 and 1980.

As the county’s press officer for the past 15 years, I have never seen any pictures of Brian with any of the above trophies. I am planning to write a history of the county in the not-too-distant future. If any of Brian’s relatives or friends can help, please contact me at andrew.griffin4@googlemail.com
